Gonzo's Quest Slot Overview
Gonzo's Quest is one of those slots that practically everyone has had a go on at some point. Made by NetEnt and released back in November 2011, it follows a conquistador called Gonzo searching for the lost city of El Dorado deep in the South American jungle. Built on a 5x3 grid with 20 fixed paylines, the big selling point here was the Avalanche mechanic, where winning symbols explode and new ones tumble down from above. It was genuinely revolutionary when it first came out.
I first played this years ago and it still holds up. Gonzo himself stands to the left of the reels, reacting to your wins with little dances and fist pumps. The stone temple backdrop, tropical bird sounds and crumbling rock effects all give it a proper adventure feel. Medium-high volatility with an RTP of 95.97% and a hit frequency of 41.10%, so you get wins fairly often even if the big ones take patience.

Symbols and Paytable
Every symbol looks like a carved stone block, which fits the Mayan jungle theme nicely. Low payers are animal carvings: a bird, a snake and an alligator. Five birds on a payline gives you 2.5x your bet, while five alligators pay 5x. Decent for keeping your balance ticking over but nothing to write home about.
Higher paying symbols are coloured mask stones in purple, yellow, green and blue. Purple gives 20x for five, yellow pays 25x, green pays 50x, and the blue mask is the one you want; five of those lands you 125x your bet. Before multipliers, mind you. The wild is a golden question mark that substitutes for everything except the scatter, and the scatter itself is a gold decorated mask that triggers the Free Falls bonus.

Bonus Features
The Avalanche feature is what makes this slot tick. Instead of reels spinning, symbols fall into place. Land a win and those symbols explode, letting new ones drop down. Each consecutive avalanche bumps up a multiplier: 1x, then 2x, 3x, and finally 5x on the fourth cascade. Chains of wins from a single spin feel proper satisfying, and with that 41% hit rate you see them fairly regularly.
Landing 3 scatter symbols triggers Free Falls, which is basically the free spins round. You get 10 free spins, and the multipliers jump significantly: 3x on the first avalanche, then 6x, 9x, and up to 15x on the fourth. You can retrigger more free spins by landing 3 scatters again during the round. I will say that actually triggering Free Falls can take a while; I have had sessions where it just would not land, which can be a bit frustrating.
The wild symbol pops up in both the base game and the bonus round, substituting for regular symbols to help complete winning lines. Nothing flashy, but it does its job. No bonus buy option here, so you are relying purely on those scatters landing naturally.

RTP, Volatility and Max Win
RTP sits at 95.97%, which is just a touch under the current industry average of 96%. Not a deal breaker by any means, but newer slots do tend to offer a bit more. Volatility is medium-high, so expect some dry patches between the decent payouts. Wins when they come can be chunky though, especially if you chain avalanches during Free Falls with those boosted multipliers.
Max win is listed at 2,500x your stake. Compared to modern slots that throw around 10,000x or even 50,000x max wins, it does feel a bit modest. For a slot from 2011 though, it was impressive. Bets range from 0.20 up to 50, so there is enough flexibility for casual sessions or slightly bigger stakes if you fancy it.
